I have seen a number of productions from Puriton Players so I know as soon as I enter the foyer I will be taken on their magical pantomime experience. A proscenium even greeted me around the ‘outside’ of the village hall entrance. I was shown to my seat following the yellow brick road and had a few minutes to absorbed the ‘attention to detail’ in the dressing of the hall. It was superb. With bright rainbows, red shoes and yellow bricks I knew that a colourful production lay ahead of me – how right I was.
This original script was a sound adaptation of the story with many traditional pantomime elements included. It was clear by your programme that Matt Dearsley had been the anchor pin in this show. His talents certainly paid off.
The sets were as professional as one could hope for thanks to the artistic skills of Rick and William Richards and large props such as the remote control, sandwich and WD40 gave this production a professional feel.
It was opening night and your prompt – Tessa Miller – was kept on her toes (especially when Aunt Em was about!) This show however moved along at a good pace although the audience number dragged on far too long.
Acting was to a good standard. I enjoyed the antic of Aunt Em (Alan Scott). Here was a sound robust dame that we all warmed too. You certainly made a spectacle of yourself by leaving your glasses on in two scenes though!
Comedy was maintained by your funny duo Salt and Pepper (Chloe Meadows and Lucy Bennett). Here were two fine energetic performers who held this pantomime together. You both showed commitment to your roles and were fun to watch and your characters brought impact to the show. I was a little uncertain of your attire though.
All principals played their roles well including the Lion (Connor Stockham) who gave his audience a roaring performance played with great enthusiasm.
The star of the show was without question Toto (Flora) a very well behaved golden labrador who made her appearance from the back of the hall on a number of occasions. This was a lovely touch adding another ‘attention to detail’ in this production.
I certainly enjoyed the chorus. Everyone had smiles and brought pace to the pantomime.
It may have been a good idea to print your songs in the programme though. I enjoyed the numbers although a few principals did struggle with their choice of song. It was also a pity that music ended very abruptly on occasions.
I enjoyed the X Factor scene. It is always refreshing to see something new and creative. It certainly paid off.
From ‘Cat walk to Dog walk’ there was something for everyone in this pantomime. A great deal of thought had been put into this show.
