Aladdin
My ninth pantomime now takes me to Street. I have seen several productions over the years and it was here that Aladdin was being performed by Moorlight Theatre Production.
The script, written by Alan P. Frayn, contained all the ingredients that you would come to expect in a traditional pantomime.
Here was a production that had pace, energy, comedy and colour and the most amazing magical illusion that even Paul Daniels would have been proud to perform!
A good strong cast included a commanding Aladdin, Robust Widow Twankey, comical Wishee Washee and a fifteen year old Abanazar. Pace and energy were provided by those Krazy Kops Yu-Dun-Wong and Hu-Dun-Pong.
All sets were pleasing to the eye and props used appropriately. The ‘usual’
laundry scene worked well and the entrance of Widow Twankey in her ‘Wash of the Week’ van was very amusing indeed. I think she may have put her foot in it with those shoes though. They were inappropriate and I would have certainly exchanged those Croc’s for Doc’s.
‘Bottom’ jokes were continuous throughout the production with a few crude ones at times. However, these would have gone unnoticed by the younger members of the audience.
The pièce de résistance was without doubt the ‘magic flying carpet’. Each year Moorlight come up with something spectacular and this was it. Not only did it fly but drifted out into the audience as well. Terrific.
All costumes were to a very high standard and the final walk-down was very striking indeed.
You certainly conjured up the magic of pantomime. Thank you Moorlight for a most enjoyable evening.
