Frome Musical Theatre Company

Sleeping Beauty

30th December

There is certainly much talent in the town of Frome, a place I have visited twice in the month of December.

My second visit took me to the Frome Memorial Theatre where their musical theatre company were presenting Sleeping Beauty.

The script however, appeared to be rather dated in places. A few more one liners would have lifted this performance up a degree. I loved the Nick Clegg and Ikea jokes. A few more of those thrown in would have been the icing on the ‘birthday cake’

This was a bright and colourful production with some good principals that the audience fell in love with.

They witnessed an adorable Fairy who sprinkled her magic with flair and charisma upon her entrances, a nasty Bad Witch Hazel that we all loved to boo from the start and a rather mixed-up Muddles who simply got muddled right from the beginning.

There was excellent vocal attack from Dame Dottie Dettol (keep taking the medicine) and the timing of the ‘post haste’ routine by Fetch and Carry was ‘first class’.

I felt the King and Queen were outstanding and graced the stage with excellent diction and regal flair.

You also have some strong singing performers within the society. This was clearly evident from Princess Rose, Prince Alexis, Good Fairy Lilac and all chorus members.

I must not forget the younger members, especially the junior dancers who were simply outstanding and performed exactly as their director had asked of them.

Thank you Frome for a jolly good pantomime production.
