George and the Dragon

My journey to Wells took me to witness a pantomime that I have never seen before. The director wanted something that was a little bit different and with ’20 years’ in the making, George and the Dragon finally made its debut at the Wells Little Theatre.
This was an excellent production with some strong cast including a robust Dame, comical broker’s men, loveable link man and terrific villain. The set designs were all very pleasing with a magnificent UV scene during Act 2.
The story unfolded with all the necessary pantomime ingredients although perhaps a tad too long. I felt tighter script editing was certainly required in places. It may have also been a good idea to have printed your song titles and scenes in your programme for us all to follow.
There were some good gags throughout the show and I loved the ‘old lady’ making her entrance to the tune ‘One foot in the grave’ – very subtle. The audience participation song was expertly handled as Donald put his volunteers at ease.
With some fine singing from principals and happy faces from both the chorus and junior members here was a pantomime that ‘certainly was special’.
